RAM (Memory)

RAM is a working table where currently active data is temporarily placed. The bigger the table, the more books, laptop, coffee, and snacks you can pile on it — likewise, more RAM keeps more apps, tabs, and projects running smoothly.

How Much Capacity Do You Need?

What to Know When Choosing RAM

  • DDR4 vs DDR5: Choose only the type your motherboard supports. The physical slots are different, so you can't swap one for the other.
  • Dual Channel: Two 8GB sticks usually give better bandwidth than one 16GB stick.
  • Speed: Higher MHz means better theoretical speed, but also check CPU/motherboard support and stability.
  • XMP/EXPO: You may need to enable XMP/EXPO in the BIOS to actually get the RAM's advertised speed.

Common Mistake: Plugging RAM into two adjacent slots won't give you dual channel. Follow the recommended slots (like A2/B2) in your motherboard manual.

You should see
"More is always better" isn't always true for RAM. Having enough capacity for your work, plus dual channel, plus motherboard compatibility, matters more.
