Power Supply (PSU)

Relax. We'll talk through this in plain words — no textbook voice.

PSU is the unit that powers every component in the PC. A cheap PSU can put your entire build at risk, so "everything else is good, so I'll cut corners a bit on the PSU" is bad advice.

What to Check on a PSU

  • Wattage: Leave headroom above the combined power needs of the CPU, GPU, and other components. An extra 100–200W is good for stability and future upgrades.
  • 80 Plus Rating: Bronze, Gold, and Platinum are efficiency ratings. For most people, an 80 Plus Bronze/Gold quality unit strikes a good balance.
  • Modular Type: Non‑modular has all cables permanently attached, semi‑modular lets you remove some, and fully modular gives you the best cable management.
  • Connectors: Make sure you have enough GPU power connectors, CPU EPS connector, SATA power, and the motherboard 24‑pin connector.
  • Brand & Warranty: Pay special attention to warranty and reviews when picking a PSU.

Safety: Never open up the inside of a PSU. Even with the power cable unplugged, the capacitors inside can still be dangerous. If you think the PSU is faulty, take it to a technician or use warranty service.

You should see
The PSU doesn't show up in any performance score, but it's the part that keeps your PC alive. If you want to cut costs somewhere, cut it on the RGB — not on the PSU.
