Motherboard

Motherboard is the main board that connects every component together. CPU, RAM, SSD, GPU, USB, Wi‑Fi, audio, fan, power cable — all of it communicates through this board.

What to Check on a Motherboard

  • CPU Socket: Must match your CPU. If the socket doesn't match, the build can't even start.
  • Chipset: Determines the feature level. The number of M.2 slots, PCIe generation, USB, overclocking support, and BIOS features all depend on the chipset.
  • RAM Slots & Type: You can't plug DDR5 RAM into a DDR4 motherboard. The number of slots matters for upgrading later.
  • M.2 / SATA: If you're installing an NVMe SSD, you need an M.2 slot. For an HDD or SATA SSD, you need SATA ports.
  • PCIe Slot: This is the slot your GPU goes into. If the GPU is large, check the clearance around the slot too.
  • Wi‑Fi / Bluetooth: If it's built in, you won't need to buy a separate adapter. Very handy if you want Wi‑Fi on a desktop.
  • Form Factor: ATX, Micro‑ATX, and Mini‑ITX must match your case size.
