Basic Configuration

Relax. We'll talk through this in plain words — no textbook voice.

After installing Git, the first thing to do is configure your user name and email. Every commit you make will carry this information.

# Set your user name
git config --global user.name "Your Name"

# Set your email address
git config --global user.email "your.email@example.com"

# Check your settings
git config --list

You should see

(Your name and email will be set in Git. This information will be attached to every commit you make from now on.)
